As of today (1st of May 2009) there are approximately 200 deaths from the H1N1
virus (more commonly known as the Swine flu virus).
As with any flu what makes this virus easily transferred is via passive means,
inhaling the germs from a cough, or a sneeze from an infeted individual is
enough to initiate infection.
Passive smoking albeit regarded differently for so long, can in the long run
prove even more dangerous, it is a well known fact that passive smoking is just
as effective as if the individual inhaled the nicotine directly from a cigarette
themselves.
With such widely available health related information governments, especially in
Europe have started a national scheme where smoking is no longer allowed in
public venues and buildings. Scotland was one of the first countries in Europe
to initiate this banning of smoking from all pubs and public buildings.

This it initiated in 2006, soon after MP’s(Member of Parliament) in England
voted to equally ban smoking in public places, in a concerted effort to improve
public health.

There was an initial uproar from owners of pubs regarding this stop smoking
campaign, and other public venues where smoking was previously allowed complained that a
large percentage of their customer base would be driven away if smoking was no
longer being allowed on the premises, and sure enough their customer base did
decline, for a while, but there is evidence now that these venues are thriving
once more, with a healthier atmosphere, new customer bases have been formed, as
many who would have been put off with going to a venue where they may be subject
to passive smoking can now freely attend such a venue without having to worry
about second hand smoke.

This new legislation has put impetus on smokers to quit smoking, along with
nicotine patches and nicotene gums there are several available techniques,
schemes and methods out there to help be smoke free, healthy, and back to a
fantastic standard of living.

The possibility of a pandemic flu is upon us. A great deal of information is available from the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation. This is a time when the internet can be really helpful by allowing us all to have access to high quality health information. Unfortunately there are many websites that have uninformed or inaccurate information. Some sites deliberately produce the wrong information to scare or mislead people. When looking for information in this sort of potential international disaster focus mainly on major Government and University websites, such as the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes for Health and the World Health Organization. These sites are literally updated by the hour with the latest data and infection rates, and include excellent educational materials for the general public. There is always a tendency to overreact in our current situation, such as when the Vice President Jo Biden was quoted on April 30th as saying he would not be flying anywhere. The fear and panic engendered by the possibility of pandemics has to be countered by being realistic about the importance of basic precautions, and ensuring that fear itself does not cause major secondary economic, social and personal problems and losses through inappropriate behaviors and actions taken by individuals and the population as a whole.

We need to consider both public health and mental health responses to pandemic flu to ensure that we do not panic. This involves the following:

-Understanding different outcomes from different influenza pandemics and the many differences among various types of influenza viruses. Bird flu is very different from swine flu, for example.

-Understand antigenic drift and antigenic shift – how the influenza virus spreads around the world

-Understand basic disaster mental health (DMH) principles and the methods, strategies, and best practices for delivering DMH services to ensure that there is not mass panic

-Recognize typical physical and psychological reactions to pandemic disasters and their time scope which can be prolonged, and often excessive, so that the reactions themselves become a chronic disability

-Understand differences between disaster mental health services and other clinical interventions

-Understand assessment processes following a pandemic disaster

It is crucial that we manage this situation without panic and inappropriate fear, are practical and pragmatic, and most importantly use simple precautions such as handwashing and basic hygeine as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. At this time it is important to use the internet to keep up to date. And it is vital not to be afraid, and not to allow panic to overtake commonsense when confronted by a potential pandemic.

Swine influenza – Swine influenza or swine flu is a respiratory disease in pigs caused by the type A H1N1 swine influenza virus (SIV). Humans in close proximity to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans.

Symptoms – Swine flu symptoms in humans are generally similar to regular flu (influenza) symptoms and include muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, lack of appetite, fever, chills, and general weakness and discomfort. Other reported symptoms are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Transmission – Swine flu spreads from pigs to humans when humans are close to infected pigs. People working in barns or visiting livestock exhibits housing infected pigs are likely to get affected. Transmission from humans to humans can occur when the infected individual coughs or sneezes when others are close by. Putting one’s hands to the nose or mouth after touching anything with the flu viruses on it could also spread the infection. Consuming well-cooked pork and pork products won’t cause infection as cooking to an internal temperature of 160??F kills bacteria and viruses, including the swine flu virus.

Treatment and medication – While swine flu can generally be cured by the four antiviral drugs approved for curing flu in the US, amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir, the recent 2009 swine flu outbreak viruses have been found to be resistant to the first two drugs. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are now recommended for treatment and prevention of swine influenza.

Prevention – Swine flu can be prevented by taking certain precautionary measures, such as washing hands frequently with soap or an alcohol-based hand wash. Staying away from infected individuals is important as their coughing or sneezing could spread the infection. If instances of infection are reported in your locality, stay indoors as far as possible. Swine flue vaccine could be out by June 2009.

The recent swine flu outbreak in Mexico has caused much trepidation among the international community, especially because of the increasing number of fatalities. It is important to recognize swine flu symptoms to prevent the spread of infection and illness.

Swine flu or swine influenza is a respiratory infection caused by the influenza type A virus, endemic in domestic pigs. In the past, swine flu has infected people only rarely – those infected being ones who have had direct and close contact to infected pigs. But the current swine flu outbreak in Mexico is different, caused by a new strain of the swine flu virus. As per recent health reports, swine flu is being transmitted with surprising speed in humans, spreading easily from person to person, causing serious illness among those infected. It has been reported that the disease has been diagnosed in humans who haven’t had any exposure to pigs.

Among pigs, swine flu symptoms include sudden onset of fever, depression, coughing, sneezing, breathing difficulties, redness or inflammation of the eye, going off feed, and discharge from the nose or eyes.

Like the influenza virus affecting humans, swine flu viruses are constantly mutating. Although the swine flu viruses are not the same as human flu viruses, swine flu symptoms resemble those produced by regular human seasonal influenza. In humans, common swine flu symptoms are fever, chills, sore throat, muscle pain, severe headache, coughing, lethargy, lack of appetite, weakness, and general discomfort. Some may even experience runny or stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

However in humans, self care measures and appropriate treatment in the early stages of infection can reduce the increased risk of these complications. In order to confirm that the illness is the result of a swine flu virus, one must undergo laboratory testing. Antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu and Relenza are considered effective for the treatment and/or prevention of infection by swine flu viruses.

Swine flu or swine influenza is a disease common in swine, with normal flu-like symptoms, but caused by any strain of the swine influenza virus (SIV – virus endemic in pigs). Though rare in humans, individuals with greater exposure to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the particular rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans. Even then, it is a rare occurrence for the strain to be able to pass from human to human. This could occur if the SIV is able to mutate into a form that can be easily transmitted among humans.

The swine flu outbreak of 2009 is believed to be caused by such a mutated strain of the SIV. The current outbreak is called swine flu only because one of the surface proteins of the tested virus is similar to the one which infects pigs. It is still unknown if this is currently infecting pigs though it’s clearly spreading among people, leading the World Health Organization to raise the Phase 4 pandemic alert. This new strain responsible for the outbreak has been found to be a re-assortment of strains of the influenza A virus subtype H1N1. These strains are separately endemic in humans and in swine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) would help in treatment and prevention. Antiviral drugs, if started within two days of the manifestation of symptoms, succeed in reducing the severity of the symptoms, preventing further complications, and hastening cure. The most effective method of prevention is to wash hands frequently with soap or with a foam or alcohol-based gel hand wash that helps wipe away bacteria and viruses. Vaccines against the 2009 H1N1 strain outbreak are in the development stage and are expected to be ready by June 2009.

Dr. Alejandro Rios is a local Internal Medicine Doctor and is also a member of the Puerto Vallarta Epidemiology Committee. He gave the latest update on the swine flu saying that there are no confirmed cases on swine flu in Puerto Vallarta or Jalisco as yet. However, Mexico City has already reported 26 cases of swine flu. Indeed the disease is spreading very fast and the President and Secretary of State are taking strict precautions to control this disease. In Puerto Vallarta, the streets remain silent and empty. Though this silence is adding to the fear, it is still better to remain indoors. Dr. Alejandro Rios condemned those who are using this opportunity to visit the beach, enjoying a mini vacation and claimed that the best thing to do is remain calm, be patient and wait for the government to give the right news.

These difficult times may even be a blessing in disguise. There would be no point in increasing or lowering prices and creating more competition amongst the already receding market. Collaboration and team work can help us all at this time. The airline industry has already made a daring move to stand together as powerful alliances. They are sharing ideas, customer information and together working at the budgets to face the difficult situation. Other brands and competitors too can join alliances and collectively use resources to advertise and join the campaign.

Pie in the Sky??? is a name very familiar to all residents. For 2 decades, it has proved to be Banderas Bay???s favorite spot for best cakes, pies and other delicious things. Mother???s day is an opportunity to delight mothers with the yummiest creamy cakes in every shape and every color. Pie in the Sky is preparing cakes coated with rich icings, even the mouth watering Belgium chocolate which will prove to be quite a treat for everyone especially mothers. You can still order before May 3rd and design the type of cake you want for your mother. These custom made cakes are made out of fresh ingredients. Pie in the Sky also offers a variety of fat free desserts, vegan and sugar free cakes. These cakes are worth every penny you will spend. You can still pick any of the ready made cakes which will be at display in case you forget to order before hand.

Doctors believe that swine flu has been around since a while now, but the outbreak has just been recognized. Nevertheless this potential pandemic can be controlled by making the simplest changes. The easiest solution that all doctors are advising is to wash hands as much as possible. This advice is simple and following it is just as easy. Swine flu is confirmed to be an airborne respiratory disease which is widely known to spread because of coughing or sneezing. Beware; even people who do not show signs of illness maybe carrying the infection. Once again to avoid all risks, face masks may help you but washing hands is an absolute must.

The swine flu epidemic is real, and it???s spreading like a flame.

The virus is suspected in 159 deaths and 2,498 illnesses in Mexico alone, according to the Associated Press (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090429/ap_on_he_me/med_swine_flu). In the United States, 66 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in 5 states. In New York City alone, 45 cases of swine flu have been reported, and there are signs it is beginning to spread from person to person. At St. Francis Preparatory school in New York, hundreds of students have been found ill with symptoms similar to swine flu, including a teacher in one of the 28 confirmed cases. The outbreak prompted a nearby school to shutdown after 80 students called in sick.

New York Health Commissioner Health Thomas Frieden confirmed, Swine flu is here, and it is spreading.???

Infections are developing around the world. The swine flu epidemic has spread to at least 7 countries after Israel itself confirmed two cases.

The United States is discouraging its own citizens from unnecessary travel to Mexico, while other countries like Cuba and Argentina have outright banned travel to the country. Mexico is doing its own part by temporarily shutting down the pyramids and requiring restaurants to serve take-out food only.

Yet experts state that the virus is already spreading too fast for such efforts to make much of a difference. The virus has already begun showing up in too many places for it to be contained.

Waiting for a swine flu vaccine will time. Although scientists hope to have a swine flu vaccine developed by early May, it will take many more months before shots are available for the first round of testing.

Simple measures can be taken on a personal level, however, to keep the infection from spreading and minimizing the danger of becoming infected. Standard prevention techniques for other common forms of flu, such as frequent hand washing and the use of alcohol sanitizers, can be very effective at slowing the spread of the virus. Influenza can spread from coughs and sneezes, so the polite rule of covering your mouth still applies.

The one piece of encouraging news is that is appears that people can make a quick recovery if the illness is treated early. Of the nearly 2,500 cases of suspected cases in Mexico, only 1,311 people remain hospitalized, suggesting that the illness is very treatable if medical attention is sought in the early stages.

There???s far more that you can do than just canceling your trip to Cancun this summer. Wash your hands frequently; cover your mouth or use tissues when you sneeze. Seek medical attention for any symptoms, as it???s always better to be safe than risk the onset of the illness.

Dr. Richard E. Besser has stated: “As this moves forward, I fully expect that we will see swine flu deaths from this infection.”? In this situation it”‘s best to take the proper precaution like swine flu vaccine to avoid spreading the disease and seek prompt treatment when symptoms appear.
